Bridging Open Work Permit
The Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) allows foreign nationals who are working in Canada to extend their work permit while awaiting a decision on their permanent residency application (APR). To qualify for the BOWP, applicants must meet specific conditions and must already be in possession of a valid work permit or have an expired work permit but have maintained their status in Canada or be eligible for restoration of their status.
Eligibility Requirements:
The applicant must be in Canada and have a valid or expired work permit, or be eligible to restore their temporary resident status.
They must have submitted an APR under one of the following categories:
Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker Class (FSWC), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC))
Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), where no employer restrictions apply.
Quebec Skilled Worker Class (QSWC)
Home Child-Care Provider Pilot or Home Support Worker Pilot
Caring for Children or Caring for People with High Medical Needs Class
Agri-Food Pilot (AFP)
The application for permanent residency must have passed the R10 completeness check and be acknowledged with a receipt letter. Additionally, the applicant must have applied for an open work permit, paid the necessary fees, and provided required documentation, such as proof of unrestricted provincial nomination if applicable.
Who Does Not Qualify for a BOWP:
Individuals whose work permits are valid for more than 4 months.
Applicants with new LMIA approvals for a new work permit.
Individuals applying for a BOWP at a port of entry or visa office.
Spouses or dependents of permanent resident applicants.
Those who are inadmissible to Canada.
This permit helps maintain continuity of work authorization while waiting for permanent residency approval, enhancing stability for foreign workers in Canada.
